Many people spend years trying to lose the same 20 pounds. I was one of them. I spent the better part of 5 years struggling with my weight. I would muster all the will power and focus I could and I would get my weight down for a short time and then gradually gain it all back plus extra. This pattern continued to the point where I could no longer bring myself to step on a scale. The reality would just hurt too much.
I estimate that my weight reached somewhere between 240 and 250 pounds. That is about 55 to 65 pounds heavier than when I ran track in community college. I was a former college athlete who went from being in great physical condition to severely out of weight in just five short years.
How did that happen?
- I always had an appetite and now with more time to kill since I wasn’t competing I ate even more. Except at that point I wasn’t training 4-6 hours a day.
- After quitting track I worked more hours at my part time job and could afford to enjoy more food.
- Growing up poor, food was always scarce. Since I was deprived for so long it was hard for me to control my urges. When I could get my hands on food I ate it.
- I ate emotionally. Eating was fun and it felt good. I ate when I was stressed. I ate when I was bored. I ate when was celebrating. I ate and I ate.
- Most of the food I ate was fast food. I was raised with some very unhealthy eating habits.
At first, I tried to lose weight by focusing on exercise. I thought if I could get an intense enough workout then I wouldn’t have to change my diet. The problem was that by that point I was too badly out of shape. One time in particular, I worked out too hard and then couldn’t raise my arms over my head for a week. Things like this would constantly happen causing me to lose all my momentum. Not too mention the injuries I had accumulated over the years had worsened due to my inactivity which made it even harder to exercise. So naturally I gained weight.
This was my main strategy for about five years. I would exercise. Lose weight. Get hurt. Gain more weight. There were maybe two variations to this pattern.
Variation 1: Exercise. Lose weight. Get busy with school/work. Gain more weight.
Variation 2: Exercise. Lose weight. Get busy with something else. Gain more weight.
The Winning Strategy
Fortunately for my health while my weight was spiraling out of control I was beginning to experiment with TAT as a way to deal with social anxiety and work stress. I had been aware that Tapas, the creator of TAT, developed TAT: Weight Loss program.
I hesitated to buy it because I was getting so many benefits from TAT in other areas of my life that I thought I wouldn’t need the weight loss program. I assumed that the weight loss program would mainly consist of doing TAT for traumatic events that could have resulted in weight problems. I could think of a few without some program and I thought if I really gave it some time and put effort into it I could think of most of them. I thought if I just did TAT on those events I could clear out all my issues resulting in my weight problems and not even need the program.
I did this for a time and I’m sure I healed a few traumas and felt better overall but I probably didn’t lose any weight.
So I finally bought the program and dedicated myself to following it. The program consists of a booklet with page after page of example statements to use during Step 1 and Step 2 of TAT. The booklet suggests reading through the example statements and doing TAT on the ones that resonate with you as issues that need healing. The idea is to go through the TAT steps as usual only using the given statements during Step 1 and Step 2. If this is your first time to doing TAT read this.
I was determined to lose weight and over the course of around 4 months I did TAT twice a day eventually using every statement in the book. At the end of the program I brought my weight down from around 240-250 pounds to around 200. By most standards that is considered amazing. I almost wish I was using NutraSystem so I could star in one of their commercials.
Since then I have given away my TAT: Weight Loss booklet but I will outline a few of the strategies by memory. This will help you get started but I highly recommend buying the product. It’s actually only around $20 and it’s the most helpful weight loss tool I’ve ever come across.
Limiting Beliefs
The booklet starts with examples of limiting beliefs that make it impossible to lose weight. The very first limiting beliefs are subtle veils which prevent TAT from working.
Here are some example statements to use during Step 1 and Step 2:
Step 1-My weight problem is too big for TAT to work.
Step 2-It’s not true that my weight problem is too big for TAT to work. TAT can easily help me with my weight.
Step 1-It will take too long to fix this problem.
Step 2-It’s not true that it will take too long to fix this problem. This problem is being fixed now.
Step 1-Losing weight is hard.
Step 2-It’s not true that losing weight is hard. Losing weight is fun and easy.
Next, the booklet moves on to limiting beliefs about life in general and eating habits. Here are some examples:
Step 1-I always have to struggle to make progress in anything.
Step 2-It’s not true that I always have to struggle to make progress in anything. I easily make progress in everything.
Step 1-Life is stressful and hard.
Step 2-It’s not true that life is stressful and hard. Life is fun and easy.
Step 1-It takes a lot of work to eat healthily.
Step 2-It’s not true that it takes a lot of work to eat healthily. Eating healthily is easy.
Step 1-I need to feel full in order to be satisfied.
Step 2-It’s not true that I need to feel full in order to be satisfied. I enjoy feeling light.
Traumas
Next, do TAT on any traumas related to food, health, weight, etc.
If you can’t think of any specific examples you can use this for Step 1 and Step 2:
Step 1: The most influential incident resulting in my problems with over eating happened.
Step 2: The most influential incident resulting in my problems with over eating happened. It’s over. It’s no longer resulting in my problems with over eating. I’m okay and I can relax now.
Triggers
We all have our triggers that cause us to over eat. This part of the booklet was very important to me since I would often eat for reasons other than simply to sustain myself.
Here is a statement that was immediately beneficial to me:
Step 1: Whenever I am bored it triggers me to over eat.
Step 2: It’s not true that being bored triggers me to over eat. I handle this in a healthy way.
Not Everyone Lost Weight
Even though I lost an amazing amount of weight, not everyone I know who tried using TAT for weight loss actually saw any change when they stepped on the scale. My girlfriend went through the TAT booklet with me and lost about 17 pounds. My mom and brother however, went through the TAT booklet as well and, to my knowledge, lost no weight. My mom said she felt less stressed but did not lose any weight.
So what made the difference? Why did my girlfriend and I lose weight while my mom and brother didn’t? While my girlfriend and I were using TAT to heal our traumas, limiting beliefs and stuck emotions, we were also changing our eating habits. We bought fresh organic fruits and vegetables and ate fast food less. It doesn’t help to do TAT for weight loss and then continue the same poor eat habits.
So then how is TAT helpful if it comes down to diet anyway? Easy, I had been trying for years to lose weight and I never could. If I could have changed my diet at the snap of a finger I would have. I just couldn’t.
I had too many limiting beliefs. I thought it was hard to eat healthy. I thought it cost too much money. I thought healthy food wouldn’t taste good.
I was traumatized. There were a few times in my childhood when there was nothing in the fridge except condiments. There were times when I wasn’t sure where my next meal would come from. So when I could afford food I had it, lots of it.
I had emotional attachments to food. It comforted me. I remember, a few years ago in college, I came home after landing my internship and I felt overwhelmed with excitement and I had to eat to handle the emotions.
So even though my weight loss came down to diet, it was doing TAT that allowed me to change my diet and stick to it. And it was easy! There was no struggle. Not to mention it felt great to finally let go of all the unresolved issues that resulted in my weight gain.
One Year Later
It’s been about one year since going through the TAT booklet. Since then my weight has dropped from 200 to around 173 pounds. Now, it isn’t solely because of TAT that I have lost more weight. But TAT does make it amazingly easy.
The main reason why I have lost more weight and even now continue to lose weight is because I have started to compete athletically again. I have been training in olympic weightlifting. Competition has given me the motivation and TAT has allowed me to do it.
So how do you know it wasn’t just genetics that allowed me to lose weight? How do you know TAT will work for you if you’re not training in a sport? Yes, competing in a sport is my main source of motivation to lose weight. However, all the years I had competed in a sport before I always had poor eating habits. I had trouble with my weight through four years of high school wrestling. Each wrestling season, I would only have “six pack” abs for about a week or two. That was as long as I could regulate my diet. During my time running track in community college, I was by no means fat but my teammates would still jokingly refer to me as the “short fat Mexican.” By regular standards I was “buff” but by the standards of college athletes I had a bit of a gut. Plus, even though I’m training in a sport, at this point I do close to zero cardio. So you can rule that out as an explanation. I may be “gifted” athletically but I have never had it easy losing weight.
It’s been a year now since I’ve completed TAT: Weight Loss so I purchased and continue to use the TAT That! Lasting Weight Loss card game. It’s a deck of cards with examples of what to do TAT on in order to continue losing weight. I have already done TAT on many of the issues presented on the cards but another round of TAT can only help. Some of the issues on the cards are new and different than the booklet. Plus, going through the cards often gives me fresh ideas for things to do TAT on. And at about 10 bucks there isn’t a lot of reason to not buy it.
So now that I’ve done TAT on weight loss issues so many times I can’t count, I feel like I never have to worry about my weight again. I’ll never have to struggle to adopt healthier eating habits. I’ll never slip into obesity again. I feel very safe. Before my appetite was such that I always had to keep it in check just to stay overweight rather than obese. Now, my appetite is big not ridiculous. And it feels damn good.
